Leicester City Football Club

Steve WalshLeicester City, or the "Foxes," were founded as Leicester Fosse in 1884 after their home turf that was located on Fosse Road, Leicester. They moved to Filbert Street soon after joining the Football Association in 1890, and played their first league game in the old Second Division in 1894.

In 1919, Leicester City was born after Fosse was dissolved due to financial difficulties. Since then the Foxes have made four appearances in the FA Cup final, but unluckily failed to nab the cup on all four occasions. Other major trophies include three League Cup wins in 1964 (vs Stoke City), 1997 (vs Middlesbrough) and 2000 (vs Tranmere Rovers). In terms of performance, Leicester has established itself as something of a yoyo team, regularly making its way into the Premiership and then back down again. It's often said that if there was a league between Championship and Premiership, City would be champions every year.

The most successful period in recent years was under manager Martin O'Neill, who came on board in December 1995. Under O'Neill Leicester secured promotion into the Premiership in 1996, where they finished top-ten four years in a row. At the end of the 99/00 season, O'Neill left the club to coach Celtic FC, and the club found a new manager for the 00/01 season in Peter Taylor. At the start of the season Leicester looked set to qualify for the UEFA Champions League with number one place on the table in October, but nine defeats at the end of the season saw the club slide down the table to 13th. The misfortune continued in the 01/02 season which saw Taylor sacked and City relegated. The club has been back up once since, but was relegated to the third tier of English football for the first time in its history at the end of the 07/08 season.

Walkers StadiumFilbert Street had been home to the Foxes for 111 years, but in 2002 the Club moved to its new home - the 32,500 seater Walkers Stadium on Filbert Way, a few hundred metres from the old site which has since been redeveloped. The construction of the new stadium had commenced a year earlier when the club was playing in the Premiership.

On the 13th of February 2007, former owner of Portsmouth FC Milan Mandaric completed his takeover of Leicester City. He announced that he will spend £9m on the club during his first 15 months in charge, and also had a goal to see City playing top-flight football again within the next three years.

The current manager is Nigel Pearson, who was appointed by Milan Mandaric after Leicester were relegated to League One following two years of poor form in front of goal in the Championship.

There are currently three Australians playing for the team - Patrick Kisnorbo, Paul Henderson and James Wesolowski. Danny Tiatto left England at the end of the 06/07 season to play with Australian side Queensland Roar.
